The Planting Date Conundrum for Corn

Conventional wisdom says that the prime planting window to maximize corn yields in much of Indiana opens about April 20 and closes about May 10. This “window” typically opens about one week later across the northern tier of Indiana counties (later warmup) and about one week earlier across the southern tier of Indiana counties (earlier warmup).

Very little corn, if any, has been planted in Indiana yet this spring as of 14 April. By itself, this is not much cause for concern because typically only a very small percentage of acres are ever planted by this date in Indiana. However, the specter of delayed planting is clearly on the horizon because little other spring fieldwork has been completed due to the frequent and sometimes excessive rainfall in recent weeks. For some growers, tillage operations, herbicide applications, and nitrogen fertilizer applications must be completed first before they can consider planting their crops.

What are the consequences of a delayed start to planting? How important a predictor of statewide corn yield is planting date anyway? Does late planting in and of itself guarantee lower than normal yields? Good questions, but the effect of planting date on statewide average corn yield is not clearcut. <Read More>

Impact of Cool Temperatures on Wheat Herbicides

The cool temperatures we experienced this spring caused some wheat growers to delay herbicide applications in anticipation of better weather. Stress conditions such as cool temps tend to limit physiological process in plants; therefore, slowing the response of weeds to the herbicide. The desired level of control may eventually be achieved; however, in some instances the slower activity may allow time for some weeds to recover. The slower activity caused by environmental stress, such as cool temperatures, may also limit wheat’s ability to metabolize herbicides, thus resulting in injury. 

The immediate forecast doesn’t look favorable which prompts growers to ask “Do I spray or wait for better weather?”  

The logical choice would be to wait for improved conditions if the size and number of weeds are small. However, if the size or number of weeds dictates to spray, consider an herbicide option that has the greatest margin of safety and is effective on the weeds that are present. Cool temperatures may have less of an impact on controlling weeds that are highly susceptible than those that are marginally susceptible.  

The following are some tips to consider as we progress through the next few days,

• Harmony and Harmony Extra are examples of ALS- inhibitor herbicides that can injure wheat in cool wet soil conditions. Injury may also occur if wide fluctuations of day and nighttime temperatures occur prior to, or soon after, application It is not clear to what extent, if any, the injury observed for Harmony and Harmony Extra impacts wheat yield. The labels of these products recommend adding 2,4-D as a tank mix partner to limit the risk of injuring wheat from the ALS-inhibitor herbicides. It is important to recognize the safest time to use 2,4-D in wheat is when plants are fully tillered and prior to jointing. 

• Some growers may be tempted to include Clarity, Banvel, or other products that contain dicamba as a tankmix partner with other herbicides to enhance control of certain broadleaf weeds. Avoid using dicamba once wheat begins to joint in order to limit the risk of injuring wheat.

• When controlling wild garlic with Harmony, Harmony Extra, or similar generic products, allow time for plants to develop 2 to 4 inches of actively growing tissue. The new growth emerges from the base of the plants and not from the old leaves that have tip burn from cold temperatures.

Winter Temperatures, Corn Flea Beetle Survival, and Potential for Stewart’s Wilt

  • Corn flea beetle winter survival is expected to be low in northern and central Indiana.
  • Moderate survival is expected for southern Indiana, higher in the Ohio River valley.
  • Corn flea beetle is a vector of Stewart’s bacterial wilt and leaf blight of corn.
  • Seed applied insecticides generally prevent early corn flea beetle feeding.
 
Corn flea beetle is a sporadic corn pest in Indiana and has had little impact of recent years. Still, winter temperatures in regions where beetles were abundant last season will determine if there is cause to be concerned this spring for susceptible inbreds and hybrids. This is especially important since this insect transmits the bacterium that causes Stewart’s disease in corn. The severity of the disease correlates with last season’s beetle abundance and this winter’s temperatures. This is because the Stewart’s wilt bacterium survives in the gut of the overwintering beetles and depends upon the beetle to infect corn. Warmer temperatures result in higher beetle survival, and therefore a greater potential for Stewart’s disease. <Read More>

Upcoming Events - Farm Succession Planning & Perry-Spencer Crop Day

Farm Succession Planning Series

Family farmers can get tips from Purdue University specialists on business communication and dealing with accounting and legal issues during a succession planning program offered at 10 sites in Indiana.

“Cultivating Strong Indiana Farm Family Relationships for Today and Tomorrow” will be offered in early 2013. The program is presented by Purdue’s Women in Agriculture and Farm Succession Planning teams in partnership with the North Central Risk Management Education Center.

Kelly Heckaman, Purdue Extension educator in Kosciusko County, said Indiana farmers and farm wives have asked educators for advice on handling their family businesses.

“In order to get estate planning started in families, they need to be able to communicate about it. And it’s an emotional topic, so it can be hard to get those conversations started,” Heckaman said. “The workshops will give families ideas on improving their conversations and skills to help them work through their problems and keep their families intact.”

Heckaman said the program is a collaboration between Extension and local communities, as organizers will invite local accountants and attorneys to speak on financial strategies. 

The first-session agenda topics are: “A Great Year to Farm: New Farmer Financial Skills,” “The Team Approach: Working Together Through Transition” and “Communicating for Success.”

The second session’s lineup is “Business Structure and Taxes,” “The Truth about Pre- and Post-Nuptial Agreements” and “Managing Conflict.”

Registration is $50 for individuals or $100 for families up to four members. Locally, the program will be offered at the Vanderburgh Co. 4-H Fairgrounds, 201 E. Boonville New Harmony Road, Evansville, on February 19 and 26, from 8:00 AM-12:00 PM CST.

Perry-Spencer Crop Day

The annual Perry-Spencer Crop Day program will be held Thursday, February 21 at 6:00 PM CST at the Fulda Sportsman Club. The program will feature Dr. Chuck Mansfield, Purdue Extension Agronomist, speaking on “Wheat Nutrient Management and Drought Effects on Soil Nitrogen”. The program will also feature an update on new fertilizer application regulations affecting farmers. 

The cost to attend is $5.00 per person, including the meal, and is payable at the door; however pre-registration is requested by February 14. PARP and CCH credit is available for an additional $10 fee. Two CCH credits will be available in categories 1, 14, and RT.

Choosing Corn Hybrids for 2013

Hybrid selection is one of the most important management decisions a corn grower makes each year. It’s a decision that warrants a careful comparison of performance data. It should not be made in haste or based on limited data. Planting a marginal hybrid, or one not suitable for a particular production environment, imposes a ceiling on the yield potential of a field before it has been planted. In the Ohio Corn Performance Test (OCPT) (http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/corntrials/) it is not unusual for hybrid entries of similar maturity to differ in yield by 80 bu/A, or more, depending on test site.

Growers should choose hybrids best suited to their farm operation. Corn acreage, previous crop, soil type, tillage practices, desired harvest moisture, and pest problems determine the relative importance of such traits as drydown, insect and disease resistance, herbicide resistance, early plant vigor, etc. End uses of corn should also be considered - is corn to be used for grain or silage? Is it to be sold directly to the elevator as shelled grain or used on the farm? Are there premiums available at nearby elevators, or from end users, for identity-preserved (IP) specialty corns such as food grade or non-GMO corn? Upcoming Event - Ohio Valley Precision Ag Conference

Purdue Extension and University of Kentucky Extension will jointly host a Nov. 29 conference to teach farmers more about how precision agriculture systems could improve their bottom lines.

The Ohio Valley Precision Ag Conference will run from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (CST) at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fairgrounds, 201 E. Boonville-New Harmony Road, Evansville. It will cover data management, implement systems technologies, and systems calibration and setup. It also will feature local precision agriculture companies and projects.
 
"The variety of technologies that farmers and industry representatives have to evaluate for on-farm use is staggering," said Kenneth Eck, Purdue Extension educator in Dubois County. "This conference will give folks a better understanding of what systems are available, how emerging technologies might mesh with producers' current systems, and how both farmers and agribusinesses can manage farm data for improved economic and environmental results."
 
The conference will start with a presentation titled "Data Utilization and Management with Precision Tools" by Betsy Bower and Troy Walker of Ceres Solutions.
 
Morning breakout sessions are:
  • "RTK Accuracy" by Tim Stombaugh, associate professor of biosystems and agricultural engineering at the University of Kentucky.
  • "Calibration Basics - John Deere" by Ben Carlisle, Wright-Stemle John Deere.
  • "Variable Rate Seeding - Can You Do It and Do You Need To?" by Bob Nielsen, Purdue     Extension agronomist.
Afternoon breakout sessions are:
  • A repeat of Stombaugh's "RTK Accuracy."
  • "Calibration Basics – Trimble/Case IH" by Kevin Roy and Kristina Nadin, Hopf Equipment Case IH.
  • "Economics of Investing or Upgrading: Old vs. New" by Greg Halich, associate Extension professor of agricultural economics at the University of Kentucky.
The conference also will feature a farmer panel discussion titled "What Do We Do With the Data and How is It Managed?" The keynote presentation will be "Precision Planting" by Gregg Sauder of Precision Planting Inc.
 
"This is the first time we've pulled together a program with so much of our expertise in one place," Eck said.

Weekly Outlook - Corn and Soybean Prices Following Short-crop Pattern

The USDA’s November forecasts of the size of the 2012 U.S. corn and soybean crops were larger than expected, particularly for soybeans. As a result, the general downtrend in soybean prices since mid-September has accelerated, with January futures now at the lowest level since June 29. Corn prices have moved into the lower half of the trading range that has been in place since mid-September and December futures are at the lowest level since September 28. So far, prices seem to be following the classic pattern associated with small crops –peaking early in the marketing year and then declining as the year progresses.

The futures market reflects expectations that prices will continue to decline, especially into the 2013-14 marketing year. The expected rebound in South American soybean production, Argentine corn production, and U.S. corn and soybean production in 2013 all contribute to the expectation of lower prices. If those crops are as large as generally expected, prices will be even lower than currently reflected in the futures market. The USDA is forecasting record South American production of both crops. If planted acreage of corn in the U.S. in 2013 is at the same level as in 2012 and the U.S. average yield is near a trend value of 162.5 bushels, the crop would total 14.6 billion bushels, about 1.5 billion larger than the record crop and record consumption of the 2009-10 marketing year. <Read More>

Premature Corn Kernel Sprouting (aka. Vivipary)

Vivipary, the premature germination or sprouting of corn kernels on the cob prior to harvest, is not a common problem in Indiana but sometimes can be serious enough to warrant attention from growers. Technically, the fact that corn kernels have the ability to germinate and develop into seedlings is not odd. Yet, when such sprouting occurs while immature or mature kernels are still attached to the cob, we consider it odd and assign a fancy name to it to reinforce the fact that we consider it odd. On the rare occasion when viviparous germination occurs throughout a field to a large enough degree, overall grain quality can deteriorate enough to cause problems with drying and storage of grain. Another consequence is the potential increase in the percentage of "broken corn and foreign material" in affected grain delivered to the elevator that may result in significant grain price discounts to the grower.  <Read More>

Extreme Drought and Heat Wave - Not a Good Combination


In the previous drought post, it was noted that if upcoming rainfall chances did not materialize, we could be at a tipping point for much worse drought conditions.  Well, as we all know, those weather systems did not materialize and we are seeing increasingly widespread drought effects on crops, lawns, and gardens.  This week's US Drought Monitor report has placed the majority of Spencer County in the the "extreme" category and the 7-day forecast from the National Weather Service indicates 100+ degree temperatures each day with no chance of rain. 

Purdue Extension and the Extension Disaster Education Network have developed a drought information website that compiles drought management tips and resources for consumers, homeowners, and agricultural producers.  This site will continue to be updated with information as long as the drought conditions persist.  I encourage you to check out this this regularly for updates.

Crop Outlook is Favorable, but Mother Nature Rules

Mother Nature always gets the last word when it comes to determining crop yields across Indiana. Last year she was unkind as a wet spring caused planting delays and then heat and dryness in mid-summer caused yield losses. Yields for both corn and soybeans were nearly 10 percent below normal.

Farmers are anxious for the new growing season in 2012 and the weather is giving them an early start. A warm and relatively dry winter means the planting season has started early increasing prospects for a return to favorable yields. 

While crop production was down in 2011, prices were at record highs. This meant that revenues for Indiana's major crops of corn, soybeans, and wheat reached a record high level of about $8.3 billion. 

A return to more normal crop production in 2012 could also bring lower prices, especially for corn. Increased production at lower prices means that total revenues would not change very much from the $8.3 billion from the 2011 crop.

However, what will change this year are higher production costs. Purdue University estimates suggest that costs of producing these crops will increase by 15 to 20 percent in 2012 compared to last year. Higher costs are led by fertilizer, fuel, and cash rents. These elevated costs mean the net returns or profits from Indiana cropland are expected to drop from the record levels achieved in the past two years. 

While a decline in returns is never welcomed, the decline is coming from record high levels. This means that crop incomes are expected to decline in 2012, but will still be strong relative to average incomes over the past decade. 

While prospects are favorable this spring, Mother Nature and market prices will ultimately determine the financial success of Indiana's 2012 crops.

Purdue On-Farm Research Opportunities

Over the years, Spencer County has been the site of many field crop research efforts and variety trials, including the wheat variety plot, one of just three Extension-sponsored wheat plots in the state, the soybean cyst plots of years past, and various industry-sponsored research.

In recent years, Purdue Extension has renewed its focus towards on-farm research. These new research efforts involve full-scale, field-sized research trials in which producers around the state collaborate with local educators and state specialists and host the trials.

On-farm research not only seeks to identify answers to important questions but may also serve to validate previously discovered answers or convince growers that an alternative crop management practice is profitable for their own situations.

Current on-farm research efforts include:
     1) Seeding rate trials in corn and soybeans

     2) Evaluating early-applied foliar fungicides in corn

     3) Nitrogen rate trials in corn

     4) Soybean fungicide efficacy trials in soybeans.

The efforts require very little extra effort on the part of collaborators beyond normal field operations.

We are currently looking for Spencer County producers who are interested in serving as collaborators in any of these research efforts.
